The DNA Race

Marcy 12/05/2019 - The DNA Race

Experiment Leaders: Maya and Josh

We had such a fun time at our last visit with Marcy Open students for the year of 2019! During this hands-on lesson, the students learned about DNA. We taught them how DNA encodes the blueprint of the Human body using nucleotide base pairs. Then they were able to transcribe DNA into RNA and then translate RNA in a protein through a hands on relay race.

The relay race activity used marshmallows as the base pairs, each color corresponding to different base pairs (adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine). Twizzlers and toothpicks were used for the backbone of the DNA and RNA structures.

The protein that they made using beads, each color corresponding to a different amino acid, codes for eye color!
