During this visit, we taught the students about the science behind roller coasters and then gave them a chance to build their own! During the intro, we were able to review potential and kinetic energy which we talked about in the fall with these same students. They also learned about friction and centripetal forces which keep the roller coaster on the tracks when doing loop-de-loops. The students used these concepts to build their own roller coaster with a loop-de-loop. The roller coaster base was simply made of foam tubing, and a marble was used as the car. This experiment was very engaging because it took many students to coordinate each roller coaster as the marble rolled along.
