Question:
What factors affect the growth of radishes?
Materials:
- Radish seeds
- Planting soil
- Planting pots
- Light filters (color and polarized)
- Growth lights
- Container that evenly distributes water among multiple plants
- Cardboard box or box lid that can cover the container
- Ruler/scale/other tools depending on how the students want to measure plant growth
Instructions:
- Encourage the students to design their own experiments, allow them to get creative!
- Fill up planting pots about 70% full with damp soil (do not pack the soil too tightly)
- Place seeds in the pot and lightly cover with a complete layer of damp soil
- Fill the container with water and arrange labeled pots in the container under the growth lights
- Cover the containers with a cardboard box lid with filters over holes cut into it to allow for control of to what types of light each plant is exposed
- Regularly measure plant growth in the manner the students have decided and maintain sufficient water in container
- Analyze the results and share the conclusions
